Richard Rogers K.C.
Richard is the Senior Partner at Rogers Rogers Moyse, concentrating his practice on personal injury litigation, including serious brain and spinal cord and injury and medical malpractice cases.
Richard graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a BA (Hons.) and attended to UNB for his law degree which he completed in 1988. He was called to the Newfoundland and Labrador bar in 1989. After his articles with the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Justice and Williams, Harris, Roebothan and McKay law firm, he continued his legal career with a concentration on plaintiff related matters and criminal defence work.
His early involvement as legal counsel in the Hughes Inquiry (Mt. Cashel) lead to continuing involvement with a number of abuse cases as Plaintiff counsel.
A successful trial lawyer, Richard has gained notoriety and attention for his cases at all levels including the Supreme Court of Canada case of R. v. Sheppard which emphasises a judicial obligation on judges to provide reasons for their decisions following trials, as well as John Doe v. The Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of St. George’s. He has also appeared successfully at all levels of court and tribunals including Provincial, Supreme Court Trial Division, Supreme Court of Appeal, Federal Court and the Federal Court of Appeal.
Nationally, Richard has worked as a legal advisor to former Grand Chief Ovide Mercredi of The Assembly of First Nations, Ottawa, and for many years as Plaintiff counsel to the Alkali Lake Indian Reserve in central British Columbia in relation to Residential School claims.
Richard guest lectures at Memorial University of Newfoundland, in a number of faculties including the MUN School of Business, the MUN School of Education, the MUN School of Medicine and the MUN School of Psychology.
Richard has been involved as a Director in a number of local groups including but not limited to the LSPU Hall, The Newfoundland and Labrador Brain Injury Association, The Wonderbolt Circus, Lakecrest School Board of Directors, and The Newfoundland and Labrador Dragon Boat Assoc. ( Cancer Survivors Support Group ). With his fondness for the arts community, Richard has also recently become involved with the support and production of independent Newfoundland film projects helping local talent as they travel on their journey to achieving their dreams.
Richard is the past chair of the Canadian Bar Association Health Law Committee Newfoundland Branch, – Co-Founder of the former Newfoundland and Labrador Party – A social response to environmental issues in Newfoundland, and founder of the annual Rogers Rogers Moyse/Knights of Columbus Christmas Dinner. He is a present member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Law Society Disciplinary Committee, and Richard and the firm continue to support and sponsor the sports community at large, with particular emphasis on Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball, The Vandals Rugby Club and Men’s and Women’s Soccer.
